Previous Seven Percent Mind Usage Interviews

If you look in the most unlikely corners of the world you will find some pretty damn good music just waiting for you. Out of Israel comes a slew of diverse band’s one of these band’s being 7% Mind Usage, a band who has no scruples when it comes to incorporating many upon many styles within their sound. Their band is an amalgamation of jazz, surf rock, metal, hardcore and all things heavy few and far in between. Without limitations the band will be a strong force to reckon with once they hit the states.

Having put out previous demo material which sold admirably fast, the band is quickly gaining ground and further developing their style while entertaining ears of all walks. With the band’s new 7 song EP was produced by Jamie King (Between the Buried And Me, Killwhitneydead etc.) they will show the world just what kind of music happenings are occurring in places that are looked over. With bands like 7% Mind Usage these areas will soon be focal points on the big map.

TheHXC.com: How long has 7% Mind Usage been around?

Idan: We've been around for about 4 years now.

TheHXC.com: Have there been any line up changes since the band began?

Idan: No, it’s just us four from the beginning, though right now we have a substitute bass player, Dror "Ritalin" Avital, because Assa is studying music in Amsterdam. But the writing of new material is still done with him.

TheHXC.com: How many years have you been playing?

Idan: I’ve been playing for about 6 years, Ran for 8, Assa for 10 and Tal for about 5.

TheHXC.com: Is it easy to get equipment in Israel?

Idan: Yeah, it’s pretty easy. In Tel Aviv, which is where we're from there are at least 6-7 stores. We don’t get the same variety or prices as in the US, but of course you can always purchase abroad!

TheHXC.com: What is the heavy music scene like in Israel?

Idan: The scene here is very unique; pretty much everyone knows everyone and the bands are usually very supportive of each other. And in the last few years the quality of bands has definitely improved, we have some really talented musicians, plus you almost never find two bands that sound alike.

Idan: The singer of our friends of the band Betzefer signing to roadrunner records proved the world what we here already know, that there is some kick ass music in Israel! The problem of it all is that Israel is a very small country, not much room to develop, so naturally as heavy bands that sing in English are most of the bands that for overseas audiences.

TheHXC.com: Who will be releasing the EP?

Idan: We don’t know yet, these days we are sending our promotional kits to all the labels which we think suit us and might be interested. So we’ll wait and see...

TheHXC.com: Will there be a video for the new single?

Idan: Probably. We have several people interested in doing that with us,
so when we'll get the time, we might just do it. For now you can check out our video for the song "Weapon Of Choice" its not the EP version of the song but a cool video nonetheless.

TheHXC.com: Is there a full length in the works?

Idan: Yes. We have some crazy new material cookin in our kitchen! Or Idan's kitchen to be exact.

TheHXC.com: The new material was produced by Jamie King, how did working
with Jamie come about?

Idan: Jamie king is amazing. He helped us a lot. We've been working together overseas for over the last year. Jamie did all the mixing and mastering as well as helping us produce this EP. He did a fantastic job realizing what we were looking for and helped us get there. Bottom line, we love you Jamie!

TheHXC.com: Are you guys working on trying to get to the states?

Idan: Sure, We want to go wherever people like our music and welcome us.

TheHXC.com: The new single "Time Kills" shows a accessible side to the band
while still keeping the aggressive nature of the band intact, was this your
goal?

Idan: Diversity is something really important to us in making our music. So we have some stuff which is more accessible and some other stuff which is the exact opposite. However we do have guiding lines for writing our music and we believe that if people like Time Kills they will also like the rest of the material.

TheHXC.com: What are some of your bigger influences?

Idan: We have some groups we all agree on their greatness and you can hear their influence in our music. But basically each player brings his own influences. For example: Ran, Our drummer, is mostly into newer types of metal and all the poly rhythmic stuff. Assa our bass player brings all the jazz, funk and atmosphere vibes. Idan, the guitar player, brings old fashion metal, rock n roll, metalcore and such. Tal brings everything, from progressive rock to metal and electronic stuff.
