Red Sparowes Interview

Red Sparowes photo   Band Name: Red Sparowes
Interviewed: Greg Burns
Interviewer: Dave Huffy
Date: 2005-11-30

Previous Red Sparowes Interviews

In the same vein as their other projects, Red Sparowes is that well rounded dynamic of music that can mesmerize with every minute of its lengthy duration. The band can be compared but not limited to such acts as Godspeed You Black Emperor, Mogwai, and Explosions In The Sky with their expansive soundscapes and dream trance crescendos.

Red Sparowes drew almost instant attention from their beginnings. Featuring members of ISIS, and Neurosis, Angel Hair, and The Cignal, one could already speculate the sounds that were going to be created. But even with these hints the predictions fall short as the band exceeds expectations.

TheHXC.com: Why a red sparrow?

Red Sparowes: Originally we were going to call the band Sparrows, but because of legal issues had to change the band name. The original name was inspired by a poem from T.S. Eliot. Adding Red and changing the spelling was a way to get around the legal issues.

TheHXC.com: Is Red Sparowes a side project that had been in the works for awhile?

Red Sparowes: is a full time band. When we first started playing we didn't plan to start a band at all, it was just a group of friends getting together to play. The songs came together very quickly though and we realized that it was something worth putting all our energy in.

TheHXC.com: Red Sparowes isn’t a frequent touring act, are there anymore tour plans coming up? Will they mostly be west coast?

Red Sparowes: We're playing an LA show and a San Francisco show with Jarboe at the end of January. We'll be touring Europe from the end of February to the middle of April. We plan another full U.S. tour for summer and might do a week or so up the west coast and a week up the east coast before then. We are in the process of putting together a week tour in South East Asia.

TheHXC.com: Your split with Gregor Samson sold out quickly, were you surprised?

Red Sparowes: The popularity of the split with Gregor Samsa was not a huge surprise as we were able to sell out of the vinyl for the full length in a very short time as well, and there was a lot of demand. We never cease to appreciate the interest though and were very excited that so many people wanted to hear it.

TheHXC.com: Are there plans for anymore splits?

Red Sparowes: I'm just finishing up mixing a song for a split with Grails, also to come out on Robotic Empire. We're talking to several other labels about splits, but right now we're working on the second full length so everything else is on hold for a bit.

TheHXC.com: Is it hard finding time between Red Sparowes and the other bands?

Red Sparowes: It's definitely a challenge. This was a very busy year for ISIS and it's always a bit of a juggling act finding time. We've always found a way to make it work though, and will continue to do so. There have been times in the past when we've had people fill in for a show here or there, including Mike Gallagher from ISIS.

TheHXC.com: Do you find it hard to get a good sound live given the atmosphere in the songs?

Red Sparowes: Not at all. In fact we all agree that the record (At the Soundless Dawn) didn't quite capture the sound of the band live, which is much more dynamic. We're working very hard on this next record to capture some of the intensity that we feel was lost on the last recording.

TheHXC.com: Will Josh be doing any videos for the band?

Red Sparowes: There aren't any definite plans, but when the time comes it's most likely that Josh will be the one directing.

TheHXC.com: Do you see Red Sparowes ever becoming a full time band?

Red Sparowes: We consider Red Sparowes a full time band now. This past year we toured close to three months, put out a full length record and a split 12". I'm not sure how much more a band could do in its first real year. This year we'll tour more than ever, release our second record as well as a couple of splits.

TheHXC.com: Are there plans to tour with any of the other band’s members of the band are in?

Red Sparowes: Most likely not. We agreed awhile ago that it wouldn't be reasonable to play shows with ISIS as it can be enough work to play one set a night much less deal with playing in two bands in one night. We did play South By Southwest with ISIS, but there were so many bands playing it worked out, the set times were pretty far apart. As far as Neurosis, we played with them last year and would again, but there aren't any plans as of yet.
