Robots And Empire Interview

Robots And Empire photo   Band Name: Robots And Empire
Interviewed: Nick and Jay
Interviewer: Dave Huffy
Date: 2005-11-04

Previous Robots And Empire Interviews

When Dreams Die was the former name of the now Robots and Empire, the band’s sound has also evolved with the change of its name, further that is. Even though Robots and Empire have only been around for a year, their members have been involved with the New York music scene for quite some time now. They signed with their friends Glacial Records and will be releasing their first EP on the label entitled “Cast Shadows On Dragons”. TheHXC spoke with Nick and Jay about the upcoming EP and what you can expect or not expect from them in the future.

TheHXC:The new album "Cast Shadows On dragons" is a doom/sludge type album, given that every release is different than your previous, where did the idea come from to do a doom album?

Nick: Ummm, we didn’t exactly set out to make a certain type of album.

Jay: Probably having a winter with our house falling apart made us do it.

TheHXC:The Does Robots And Empire pick a different type of music to tackle with every release of does it just happen that way?

Jay:we've only been together as robots and empire a year, and have one other release so i dont really think it was a conscious decision.

Nick: I guess we'll have to see how the other releases sound.

TheHXC: The Do current influences contribute to this change?

Jay: Current and non-current.

TheHXC: What are you listening to lately?

Jay: Well, I can’t speak for brain or Greg but I’ve been listening to Neil Young.

Nick: Ben folds "songs for silverman"

Jay: Actually, I’ve heard Greg rocking "purity and control" by Giants Chair a lot while driving back from shows, and heard Brian listening to ray Charles a lot.

TheHXC: Robots and Empire have been around for awhile now, do you guys just feel the freedom to go any direction you wish at this point?

Jay: Well, we've only be together a year, but since the beginning of our old band we've always felt that way.

TheHXC: Because of these constant changes it is clear you guys believe in the notion that you can do whatever you want with music.

Nick: There’s always a certain point that we might be heading for but none of us no what it is.

Jay: Well we've never really changed genres or anything , we've always been heavy and aggressive.

TheHXC: Are there touring plans for the new album?

Jay: Yes, but we don’t know where yet, we've playing out on the weekends constantly.

TheHXC: Are there already plans for what the next release will sound like?

Jay: We have about 8 or 9 new songs.

TheHXC: Given the duration of Robots and Empire, have you guys been looked at by any larger labels?

Jay: Check out glacialrecords.com, not larger but COOLER.

TheHXC: Are there any Robots and Empire side projects?

Jay: Greg has a band with his brother that he wants to call Chet, and Brian has a project in the works with our friend Bones.

TheHXC: Your new album is on Glacial Records, a label closely associated with Robots and Empire, how did Glacial come about?

Jay: By dealing with other labels and the shittyness of them.

TheHXC: Are there any video plans? A DVD perhaps spanning the years of Robots and Empire?

Nick: Perhaps, we'll just have to wait for the years to add up.

TheHXC: That's all on my end, thanks for your time, is there anything you would like to add?

Jay: Our album "cast shadows on dragons" comes out in Nov., www.glacialrecords.com, www.robotsandempire.com
